From Dr. Schaeffer:
March 20, 2024
Dear Parents, Staff, Students, and Community Members,
At our school board meeting on Monday March 18, 2024 the board approved my recommendation to use a calamity day on April 8, 2024, due to the Solar Eclipse event. This recommendation was made upon careful consideration and consultation with Ottawa and Sandusky County emergency management agencies.
This decision has been made in the best interest of the safety and well-being of our staff and students. Recent discussions with our county emergency management agencies have indicated that there is expected to be a significant influx of visitors, with estimates reaching upwards of 200,000 people. There is concern of heavy traffic/ gridlock and pressures upon our emergency response teams should this occur. In light of this information, it is important that we take proactive measures to ensure the safety of everyone in our school community.
As a result, there will be no school on April 8, 2024. Furthermore, there will be no school work expectations for students on this date. Instead, parents are encouraged to take this opportunity to enjoy the Solar Eclipse event with their children and engage in educational activities related to this rare astronomical phenomenon.
I want to assure you that the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priority, and we believe that this decision will help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone during the Solar Eclipse event.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
Sincerely,
Dr. Mary Schaeffer
Woodmore Schools Superintendent
